Yoga means “to yolk”
MIND, BODY & SOUL.
Savasana is the most important asana because of proprioception, when the mind catches up to the experience that just took place. It does this in order to fully assimilate the new. Next time the muscles will remember what you did so next time you can dive deeper.
Yoga has been practiced for over 5,000 years, to channel the subtle energies that create our internal and external world. We learn to unite back to our true nature and connect to the world around us with the perception of Ultimate Reality. The world around us is a reflection of the internal and how we treat others is how we will be treated. Yoga includes a moral code of ethics, postures, breath work, sense withdrawal, focus, and meditation - to achieve unity. Asana translates to posture in Sanskrit, and is the practice of holding the body in a position so pranayama is possible. Pranayama is the Sanskrit word for breath control - we live how we breathe. Air enters into the thoracic lung cavity, and diaphragm, and then the breath is complete in the abdominal cavity. We begin to withdraw inward and bring focus to an object - such as breath. The mind must always have something to focus on - “How will I handle this thing that I am facing?”.
The mat becomes a place of life conditioning and peace. Like an aspen tree, we learn to flow with the seasons, so as not to break when the difficulties of life surface. The impossible becomes manageable and dreams become real.
When in balance, there is a deeper connection to self and indomitable will to honor this love.
The body holds tension in muscles when suppressed. So, as we get older, the tendency is for the body to harden and stiffen, like a sturdy oak tree. This leads to body pain and sickness.
